WWE Live: Braun Strowman comes out on top in Birmingham

Sky Sports and WWE UK competition winner Simon Williams was in attendance at Birmingham this week. Here’s his report…

WWE returned to the Genting Arena in Birmingham this week – and an all-action entertainment was the order of the day.

The passionate fans who filled the arena were treated to nine top-class bouts of wrestling from the global superstars of the company as their UK tour continued to dazzle the crowds.

First up was a triple threat Raw tag team championship bout featuring the champions Matt Hardy and Bray Wyatt against the B Team, Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas, and Heath Slater and Rhyno.

This was a very intense match and with six giant wrestlers chaos ensued but the crowd favourites Hardy and Wyatt retained their titles.

Next up was a UK championship match featuring Birmingham’s own Pete Dunne taking on the high-flying Mark Andrews in another hard-hitting match.

We've picked out the best moves and moments from this week's WWE SmackDown

This one ended with Dunne retaining his title much to the crowd’s delight, as they serenaded their hometown hero with chants of “Bruiserweight”.

Chad Gable and Zack Ryder then faced Goldust and Mojo Rawley – a fun match with Goldust hilariously stopping the mat halfway through to say: “Give me a minute I’m old!”

Gable and Ryder, however, picked up the win.

Next up – to the delight of the crowd and the young lady next to me – was Finn Balor, who picked up a win over Baron Corbin with a Coup de Grace.

Raw women’s champion Nia Jax retained her title in a fatal four-way which also included Alexa Bliss, Bayley and Sasha Banks.

Jax only flew in from New York the day before the event but enjoyed a good night, pinning Bliss for the victory.

The final pre-intermission match saw Intercontinental champion Seth Rollins take on Jinder Mahal, who told me in the VIP area before the event that if he does not receive championship opportunities soon, he will defect to SmackDown.

A very physical match ended with Rollins retaining his title following a Stomp.

Ember Moon and Natalya then faced Ruby Riott and Liv Morgan, with the crowd favourites picking up the victory.

Elias arrived to a huge reception but was interrupted by Bobby Roode, who accepted the proposition of a duet between the two.

Together they sang Oasis’ “Wonderwall” and while Roode has a very good voice, it was not appreciated by Elias, who attacked the Glorious One and an all-out brawl ensued.

The main event of the evening saw Kevin Owens, the amazing Sami Zayn and – in the shock of the night – SmackDown superstar Samoa Joe take on Bobby Lashley, Braun Strowman and Roman Reigns.

A very good match ended with Strowman and Reigns hitting their finishers to send the crowd home happy.

Verdict: A fantastic night was had by all and I would strongly recommend the WWE live experience!
