William Buick excited by Masar ride in Investec Derby

William Buick is convinced Masar can give him a good spin around Epsom in the Investec Derby on Saturday.

The Charlie Appleby-trained colt ran a tremendous race to finish third behind Saxon Warrior in the 2000 Guineas after winning the Craven Stakes.

Though he has yet to run beyond a mile, connections are optimistic he will stay further.

“He ran lovely in the Guineas and he should stay,” said Buick.

“He ran like he will definitely get further than a mile and obviously we meet the winner again, Saxon Warrior, but the Derby is the Derby – it is the ultimate race.

“It is a tough race and a lot needs to go right for you in it, whatever horse you are on.

“Masar has had plenty of racing experience, the balance and a really good attitude. He should relax nicely and we are very positive about him.”

Aidan O’Brien’s Saxon Warrior spearheads a formidable Irish challenge that includes Hazapour.

Trainer Dermot Weld reports the son of Shamardal to be primed for the ultimate test Epsom provides after Frankie Dettori

flew over to Ireland to partner his Investec Derby mount on Tuesday.

Winner of the Derrinstown Derby Trial, traditionally a good pointer towards the Epsom Classic, Hazapour has been well backed in recent days.

Hazapour is related to Harzand, Weld’s first winner of the blue riband two years ago.

“Hazapour is in great form. Frankie Dettori came and rode him and I’m glad to say he was very pleased with him,” said the Rosewell handler.

“It wasn’t that we did anything magical with him, we didn’t ask him to do anything spectacular. He’s an idle horse, a lazy colt, but Frankie was satisfied with him and I was very satisfied with him.

“He worked well and scoped clean. I looked at him as 12 o’clock (on Tuesday) and he was lying down asleep!

“Frankie just did what he wanted on him. It was a nice work out, he got a feel of him, and said he was a very balanced colt.”
