Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo crashes out during P1 at the Spanish GP.
Red Bull suffered an early setback following their introduction of an upgraded RB14 at the Spanish GP after Daniel Ricciardo crashed out of Practice One.
Ricciardo, running a revised Red Bull with parts of the new package on, lost control of his car at the exit of Turn Four and ran straight over the gravel and into the wall.
The shunt, which seemed to break his front wing, ruled the Australian out of the rest of the session.
McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull reveal new looks
Red Bulls still free to race
“It’s obviously not ideal,” Red Bull boss Christian Horner admitted to Sky F1. “But it won’t compromise his car-spec.
“We’ve seen quite a few cars going off there. There is a bit of a tailwind and a bit gusty there and it looks like it’s caught him out unfortunately,”
As ever, Barcelona is hosting the first substantial round of car upgrades for F1 2018 with McLaren and Ferrari also revealing new designs.
But while Ricciardo labelled the new-look RB14 as “pretty crazy”, Sky F1’s Ted Kravitz doubted he was using the the full upgraded spec at the time of his crash.
“There are bits of the new package on Ricciardo’s car, but I don’t think it’s all of it,” he said.
“Probably because of the chance of incidents like this!”
