Sonny Bill Williams denies he is planning return to rugby league

Sonny Bill Williams has rubbished reports he is planning a move back to rugby league and says he remains hopeful of securing a place in the All Blacks squad for the upcoming World Cup in Japan.

Williams has been linked with a return to his former club Sydney Roosters, who he spent one season with in 2013-14 before returning for his second spell in union with Super Rugby side Chiefs.

Former Roosters player Jimmy Smith claimed a “deal is done” for Williams to join the Roosters for a “short stint” while speaking on Sydney radio station 2KY last week, but the All Blacks centre denied the claims on Monday.

“I love being a part of the @BluesRugbyTeam & @AllBlacks,” Williams wrote on his Twitter account.

“God willing I’m a part of another successful World Cup Campaign next year in 2019.”

Williams is contracted with the Blues and New Zealand Rugby (NZR) until after the 2019 World Cup.

A NZR spokesperson denied Williams was planning to return to the Roosters and told the New Zealand Herald they did not want to give “oxygen to a story that was patently wrong”.

The Roosters have also denied the story.
