Should Dwight Gayle’s goal have stood in Newcastle defeat by Bournemouth?

Dwight Gayle had a goal ruled out for offside in the defeat by Bournemouth

Dwight Gayle had a goal disallowed for Newcastle in their 1-0 home loss against Bournemouth, but should it have stood?

Gayle looked level with the last defender as he rolled the ball into the net in the first half after Matt Ritchie’s curling effort from 25 yards came back off the post, but the linesman ruled it out for offside.

Despondent manager Rafael Benitez was clearly unhappy with referee Paul Tierney’s performance, but was keeping his own counsel when asked about the disallowed goal.

He said: “I will not talk about the decisions because I am not very happy with the decisions.”

Bournemouth moved out of the bottom three after a Steve Cook header in the final minute of stoppage time in a game full of chances for both sides at St James’ Park.
