Ireland's Sam Bennett won an exciting sprint finish on stage 12 of the Giro d'Italia
Ireland’s Sam Bennett surged to victory in stage 12 of the Giro D’Italia, despite heavy rain and strong crosswinds.
Bennett took victory with an exhilarating sprint finish in Imola, fighting off the challenge of Lotto NL-Jumbo’s Danny van Poppel.
The drenched streets did not prevent Bennett powering clear and taking victory by a clear margin.
His main sprint rivals, including points leader Elia Viviani, had been caught out in the closing 30km with only just over 50 riders coming to the line in the lead group.
There were no changes to the overall classification, still led by Britain’s Simon Yates, whose 47-second advantage over Tom Dumoulin remains intact.
