Rory McIlroy goes inches away from making a hole-in-one during the third round of the Masters
Rory McIlroy came inches away from his maiden major hole-in-one as he made a significant move up the leaderboard during the third round of the Masters.
The 28-year-old, aiming to became only the sixth player in history to complete a career Grand Slam, went into the weekend five strokes off the pace but made a fast start to his front nine on Saturday.
McIlroy parred his opening two holes before draining a 20-footer at the third and holing a birdie from a similar distance at the next, with better to come at the par-three sixth.
The four-time major champion attacked the flag off the tee and saw his effort go all-so close to finding the centre of the target, with ball taking his one small hop and stopping stone-dead next to the cup.
Although McIlroy narrowly missed out on the tournament’s first ace of 2018, he tapped in for birdie to close the gap on the leaders.
