Michael van Gerwen brilliantly beat Gary Anderson 7-3 on Thursday when Premier League Darts rolled through Newcastle.
Peter Wright refused to shake hands with Rob Cross, who had just beaten him, in the night’s other stand-out moment.
Gary Anderson 3-7 Michael van Gerwen
Van Gerwen returned to winning ways as he defeated two-time world champion Anderson in an all-time Premier League classic in Newcastle.
MVG threatens a nine-darter… but Anderson finishes from 170 on the bull!
Van Gerwen averaged 110.62 and landed seven maximums to prevail 7-3, as ‘The Flying Scotsman’ was beaten despite averaging 110.79, posting four maximums and two 177’s.
‘The Green Machine’ opened up an early 2-0 lead, but Anderson replied with a 78 finish, before levelling proceedings inside 11 darts.
Anderson then clinched an extraordinary fifth leg with a sensational 170 checkout, despite MVG kicking off the leg with seven perfect darts.
MVG then restored parity with a 12-dart hold in a leg containing three maximums, before he regained the lead with a two-dart 64 combination.
The pair continued their relentless scoring, but Anderson missed seven darts at double across the next three legs and Van Gerwen took full advantage to prevail in a sensational tussle.
Peter Wright 4-7 Rob Cross
Cross opened his account in the Premier League with victory over world No 2 Wright which ended in acrimony.
Wright refused to shake hands with Cross
Snakebite defeated Michael van Gerwen last week, but was unable to follow that up with a win over the world champion.
Cross moved 6-3 up to guarantee himself a share of the spoils, but squandered two match darts in the 10th leg, as Snakebite converted a classy 101 kill to preserve his hopes.
However, the roles were reversed moments later, as the Scot missed three darts to force a decider and Cross capitalised; pegging D16 to register his first ever Premier League win. Wright wouldn’t shake Cross’ hand post-match.
Mensur Suljovic 2-7 Michael Smith
Smith made it three wins from three in this year’s Premier League after wrapping up a comprehensive victory over Suljovic in the evening’s opener.
Smith took out finishes of 72 and 68 to establish an early 2-0 lead, but the Austrian responded to level at 2-2. However, Bully Boy then ran riot, taking out finishes of 116 and 91 as he reeled off five straight legs to close out victory. Suljovic is cut adrift at the bottom of the table, having yet to register a point
Daryl Gurney 6-6 Gerwyn Price
Price fought back from 5-1 behind to salvage a point against Gurney in a battle of the debutants.
Price came back from 5-1 down to grab a point
Price took out 148 to cut the deficit to 5-3, before conjuring up an inspired 136 finish in the penultimate leg with Gurney sat on 62 for the match, and ‘The Iceman’ kept his cool to secure a point with a 15-dart hold in the decider.
