Second in his last three outings, Jean-Claude Rouget’s colt had chased home Aidan O’Brien’s filly Happily on Arc de Triomphe day in the Jean-Luc Lagardere.

This time O’Brien fielded Dewhurst and Middle Park winner US Navy Flag and from stall 11 Ryan Moore was intent on getting across to the rail.

That meant he found himself in front and for most of the race he had an uncontested lead until James Tate’s Hey Gaman loomed up on his outside.

The pair had a good tussle for a furlong before the French challenge came, with Dice Roll on the inside and Olmedo on the outside.

As US Navy Flag dropped away, Hey Gaman was sandwiched between the French runners and it was Olmedo and Cristian Demuro who came out on top with the British raider second

Godolphin’s Wootton, who beat Olmedo last time out, got lit up at halfway and went speeding around the rest of the field before those exertions told close home.
