George Russell took his maiden F2 pole position at the French Grand Prix with two stunning laps at Paul Ricard.
At one stage the Mercedes junior was six tenths of a second clear of the rest of the field, before Alexander Albon and Lando Norris slotted into the gap between Russell and Sette Camara.
Given the identical machinery, the gap of 0.166 seconds to Albon, 0.312 seconds to Norris and 0.674 seconds over ART team-mate Jack Aitken, who starts sixth, underlines Russell’s performance.
He picks up four points for pole, moving him onto 66 points and within five of Artem Markelov and Albon who are tied for second on 71. Norris leads the championship on 98 points.
McLaren’s Nyck De Vries could have been in with a chance of challenging for the frontrow, but his car went into a safety mode in the final sector ruining his final attempt. The Prema driver will start eighth.
Haas junior Santino Ferrucci was another to have issues and reported turbo problems early in the session, but quick work from his Trident team saw him back out to take 13th spot.
The F2 Feature Race is live on Sky Sports F1 from 4:40pm following F1 qualifying.
