Mark Beaumont has broken the record for cycling around the world – by 44 days.
The 34-year-old Scot arrived in Paris one day ahead of schedule having cycled the 18,000-mile route in 79 days.
He had set a new world record of 194 days in 2008 which was superseded on several occasions, ultimately bringing the mark down to 123 days.
Undaunted, Beaumont took up the challenge to reclaim the record, and after averaging more than 16 hours in the saddle a day – and five hours sleep per night – he is back in the record books with a bang.
He endured sub-zero temperatures, forest fires and emergency dental treatment in Russia after a fall, but he says the magic ingredient that got him home was ‘grit’.
Beaumont has been raising money for Orkidstudio, who work to benefit communities worldwide through innovative architecture and construction.
