La Liga: Sevilla’s chances of European qualification scuppered by Real Betis draw

Champions League quarter-finalists Sevilla will not be playing in Europe next season following a 2-2 draw against city rivals Real Betis.

Wissam Ben Yedder and Simon Kjaer turned the derby in the favour of Joaquin Caparros’ side following Marc Barta’s early opener, but substitute Loren equalised nine minutes from time.

Fourth-placed Valencia ended a five-game winless run at Girona.

Argentine forward Luciano Vietto, on loan from Atletico Madrid, claimed the winner, notching only his second league goal of the season just after the hour mark.

Atletico Madrid warmed up for the Europa League final with a 1-0 win at Getafe.

Diego Simeone’s men, who face Ligue 1 side Marseille on Wednesday, secured the three points thanks to Koke’s eighth-minute strike and Jan Oblak’s second-half penalty save from Faycal Fajr.

Villarreal, meanwhile, held off a late fightback from relegated Deportivo La Coruna to win 4-2 at the Riazor.

Samu Castillejo’s double and a goal from Manu Trigueros had the hosts three goals up at half-time before Denis Cheryshev made the points safe late on after a double from Deportivo’s Valle Borja.

Elswhere, goals from John Guidetti, Munir El Haddadi and Ibai Gomez put Alaves on course for a 3-1 victory over Basque rivals Atheltic Bilbao, prior to Iker Muniain’s consolation, while Eibar beat relegated Las Palmas 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Brazilian forward Charles.

In the day’s opening game, Willian Jose scored the winner from the penalty spot as Real Sociedad beat Leganes 3-2. Diego Rico and Miguel Guerrero had brought the visitors level following first-half strikes from Sociedad pair Mikel Oyarzabal and Sergio Canales.
