Kal Yafai cannot lose belt to David Carmona after Mexican misses super-flyweight limit

David Carmona cannot take Kal Yafai’s WBA super-flyweight belt in Fresno on Saturday after failing to make the weight.

Yafai (23-0-KO14) will still face Carmona in Fresno, California, in the early hours of Sunday morning, live on Sky Sports, but the Mexican (21-5-5-KO9) weighed in 3.6lb over the limit on Friday.

The Briton weighed in just inside the 115lb limit for the bout, which takes place on the same Save Mart Center card as an IBF title showdown at the same weight between champion Jerwin Ancajas and Jonas Sultan.

Carmona’s weight indiscretion means he cannot take Yafai’s belt, with the WBA title becoming vacant if he should overcome the odds and beat the Olympian.

Yafai said on Twitter: “Felt great weighing in today! Absolute joke how he came in so much over the weight! I’m ready to defend my title in style! Thank you all for all the support! #AndStill.”

He is making the third defence of a title he won in late 2016 against Luis Concepcion, having beaten Japanese opponents Suguru Muranaka and Sho Ishida on points since.

Carmona bounced back with a win in his most recent fight against Jesus Iribe, having lost his previous three including a world title shot against Jamie McDonnell’s Friday conqueror Naoya Inoue.
