Jim Furyk praises Thomas Bjorn’s Ryder Cup vice-captains picks

Jim Furyk discusses his opening round at the Fort Worth Invitational and his ongoing preparations as USA Ryder Cup captain

US Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk believes there are “no surprises” in European counterpart Thomas Bjorn’s Ryder Cup vice-captains selections.

Bjorn added Lee Westwood, Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald and Graeme McDowell to the already-announced Robert Karlsson to complete his backroom team for the biennial matchplay event, being held at Le Golf National in September.

Furyk is yet to confirm his full complement of support staff, with the resurgent Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker named as vice-captains in February – joining Davis Love III, and says Donald and McDowell might harbour hopes of a playing capacity.

“No surprises. A lot of experience on that [backroom] team,” Furyk told Sky Sports, after an opening level-par 70 at the Fort Worth Invitational.

“I think Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington were obvious choices – I see them as captains in the near future.

“Luke and Graeme are still young players thinking maybe in the back of their minds they want a shot at making the team.

“But [they are] formidable Ryder Cup players – still active, playing a lot of golf and definitely know the players very well whether in Europe or the US.

“They are great choices – I am friends with all those guys and admire them.”

USA are seeking to defend the trophy they regained with victory at Hazeltine in 2006 and win on European soil for the first time since 1993.

“I am excited but I as anxious as I am – I want the Ryder Cup to be next week at times – I also know there is a lot of preparation work to do. It’s been fun,” said Furyk.

“Most of the time people ask ‘is really as much work as everyone says’. We work hard at it – Thomas and I both – because we enjoy it, it’s important to us and the players playing for us.

“I can’t say enough about it. These two years are flying by.”
