Graeme McDowell rattles flag and finds bunker at Shinnecock Hills

Graeme McDowell endures a terrible slice of luck at the US Open as his bunker escape cannons off the pin and ends up back at his feet in the sand.

Graeme McDowell was on the receiving end of an annoying bad break from a flag during a frustrating first round at the US Open.

The Northern Irishman struggled during a day of high scoring at Shinnecock Hills, where the world’s top players found life difficult in blustery conditions.

McDowell double-bogeyed his opening hole and posted three consecutive bogeys from the 12th on his way to reaching the turn in 40, before worse was to follow on his second nine.

After three-putting the par-four first to slip to six over for the round, McDowell missed the putting surface off the par-three next tee and finished in the greenside bunker.

McDowell splashed out of the sand and his effort had the perfect line as it rattled the flag, only to ricochet off it back into the bunker on his way to a double-bogey five.
