Fabio Fognini drops racket but still wins set point in Rio Open match

Watch Fognini catch his racket straight out of the air and go on to win the point.

Fabio Fognini won a bizarre point on his way to first-round success at the Rio Open, while Marin Cilic and Albert Ramos Vinolas eased into the last 16.

Fifth seed Fognini took centre stage on the opening night of the main draw when he took on home favourite Tomasz Bellucci as the pair played out a near three-hour epic with the Italian eventually prevailing 6-7 7-5 6-2.

Having come from a set and 0-4 down, Fogini lost his grip after serving for the second set and saw his racket fly out of his hand. Luckily, though, the world No 21 saw the serve land in and the racket bounce back up into his hand allowing him to go on and win the point.

Elsewhere in the first round top seed Cilic had little trouble getting past Argentine qualifier Carlos Berlocq – needing just 79 minutes to wrap up a 6-2 6-2 victory to advance to a possible second round meeting with Gael Monfils – if the Frenchman comes through his opener again Horacio Zeballos.

Fourth seed Albert Ramos Vinolas needed three sets to beat Brazil’s Rogerio Dutra Silva and will next face Chile’s world No 94 Nicholas Jarry who beat Spain’s Guillmero Garcia Lopez.

Eighth seed Fernando Verdasco was also taken the distance by Leonardo Mayer before eventually prevailing while one of the biggest shocks of the first round came when Portuguese lucky loser Gastao Elias accounted for 2016 runner-up Guido Pella.

Monfils, and world No 6 Dominic Thiem are among the names in action on Tuesday night, while coverage of the Rio Open continues on Sky Sports Arena from 7.30pm and Main Event from 11pm.
