England got off to another blistering start at Trent Bridge – a ground where they posted a world-record 481 against Australia last month – and were 71-0 at the time of Kuldeep’s introduction after 10 overs.

Kuldeep, who impressed during the T20 series, taking 5-24 at Old Trafford, proceeded to take three wickets in his opening two overs – Jason Roy (38) caught at cover reverse-sweeping, and Joe Root (3) and Jonny Bairstow (38) both out lbw when failing to pick the spinner.

Ben Stokes (50 off 103) and Jos Buttler (53 off 51) rebuilt with contrasting half centuries in a 93-run stand for the fifth wicket, but both ultimately fell to Kuldeep as he claimed a second five-for of the tour, while Moeen Ali (24 off 23) and Adil Rashid (22 off 16) pitched in with some handy runs at the back end of the innings.
