Despite the early wicket, in the ninth over, Root’s decision to bat first after winning the toss appears to have been the right one as there were few other scares for England’s batsmen, other than Jennings being dropped on nine.
Ishant Sharma, who found some nice shape away from England’s left-handed openers in his first spell, drew Jennings’ edge in the sixth over, but Ajinkya Rahane put down the sharp chance at fourth slip.
Cook was bowled soon after, with Ashwin – introduced as early as the seventh over – finding drift into leg stump and sharp turn away to clip the top of off-stump, but Jennings and Root guided the hosts to the interval without further alarm.
