Duke Of Firenze set for Dash test again

David Griffiths is hoping Duke Of Firenze can bounce back after a disappointing run at York when he lines up for the Investec Corporate Banking Dash at Epsom on Saturday.

The Bawtry trainer reports the nine-year-old to have returned from the Knavesmire in good form and he is looking for a better performance from his stable stalwart.

Duke Of Firenze has to defy top weight of 9st 10lb in the five-furlong heat which he won in 2013 when under the supervision by Sir Michael Stoute and he has finished third for Griffiths in the last two renewals of the valuable sprint.

“He’s well. He was disappointing at York on Saturday. I thought he’d be in the first three,” said Griffiths.

“There seemed to be no excuse for it. I know he had a lot of weight but he’s run well in the Dash off the same mark before.

“He just didn’t seem to fire, but he’s come back fine.

“If he’s back to his best form he’d go close.”

Griffiths has three other entries in the Dash but Duke Of Firenze looks like being his only runner.

“We’ve got Tavener and Pearl Acclaim but they will probably get balloted out and Lucky Beggar runs at Catterick on Friday,” he said.

Griffiths’ string as a whole had not been performing to their best recently but the tide turned on Monday.

“We had a winner and a second on Monday which was good because they hadn’t been running well for the last three or four weeks. Hopefully we’ve turned the corner now,” he said.
