Eagle-eyed tech fans in California have spotted Apple’s latest project, called “Titan,” going for a test drive.
Apple’s project to create a self-driving car appears to have reached the testing stage, after a vehicle sporting a roof array was seen close to the company’s California headquarters.
The video was posted by MacCallister Higgins, who is co-founder of self-driving car manufacturer Voyage Auto. Other people responded to the thread with their own photos of the Apple test car.
The same model, a Lexus RX450h SUV crossover, was also spotted earlier this year with a different array of sensors and optical cameras on its roof. The equipment included a LIDAR sensor made by Velodyne, a leading developer of sensors for autonomous cars. This time, it appears that Apple’s equipment is custom-made.
In June, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the company is developing “autonomous systems” for cars. Self-driving cars are a “core technology that we view as very important,” he told Bloomberg.
